Senior Citizens, Inc. Learning Center: Lifelong Learning for Adults 55+

“Hello, I’m Jenny O’Sako, Partner with Sterling Seacrest Pritchard and the current Board Vice Chairman for Senior Citizens, Inc. You probably know Senior Citizens, Inc. from our Meals on Wheels program, Adult Day Health Center, and our Neighborhood Centers.”

Introducing the Learning Center

“In addition to these wonderful services, I want to share more about the Learning Center, one of the most innovative programs offered by Senior Citizens, Inc. It’s dedicated to lifelong learning for adults 55 and older, people who want to stay curious, connected, and intellectually active as they age.”

What Makes the Learning Center Unique?

“It’s not your typical classroom experience. These are small group, discussion-based sessions, field trips, lectures, and experiences that inspire participants to keep learning just for the joy of it. Classes are offered year-round and cover an incredible range of topics, from literature and science to politics, film, art, and even local history.”

Why Lifelong Learning Matters

“The Learning Center is so important for our community. Research continues to show that intellectual engagement plays a big role in aging successfully. The Learning Center gives older adults a space to challenge themselves, connect socially, and keep their minds sharp. Even more than this, it’s fun! It’s a place for older adults to feel energized and excited to learn again.”

Program Highlights and Experiences

“For example, recent program highlights include a group travel experience to Ireland. It wasn’t just two weeks of sightseeing, but a travel experience that blended education with exploration.

Participants studied Irish history, music, and literature prior to the trip, then were able to bring those lessons to life along with the expert guides at the Learning Center staff. We hosted a powerful series on banned books, sparking meaningful conversation about censorship, freedom of expression, and literature’s role in society. Our goal is to continuously bring in professors, musicians, authors, and historians to lead courses that are both intellectually rich and meaningful.”

Upcoming Courses and Events

“The diversity of topics is what makes the Learning Center so special. There’s truly something for everyone. Coming soon, we’re hosting a community discussion around caregiving, centered on clips from a caregiving documentary produced by Bradley Cooper.

We’re pairing that with a panel conversation to make it personal and local with caregivers and experts in our community. We’re also planning new courses in music appreciation, U.S. Foreign Policy, and even hands-on writing creativity workshops. Every semester looks a little different based on what the community is excited to explore.”

Join our Community of Lifelong Learners

“The Learning Center is directly connected to our mission at Senior Citizens, Inc., which is all about helping people age successfully by strengthening the mind, creating a sense of purpose, and community connection. We’re celebrating our 65th anniversary this year and invite everyone to join in our year-long celebration. If you or someone you know is 55 or older and wants to stay intellectually and socially engaged, the Learning Center is worth exploring.

You don’t have to be retired or an academic, just curious and open to new experiences. For more information about the Learning Center, to check out our current summer catalog, or any of the other services provided by Senior Citizens, Inc., please visit our website at seniorcitizensinc.org”
